Finding Internet Projects

  • Quia--Quintessential Instructional Archive. Create your own quizzes, web pages, and games. Explore the activities other teachers have already created that are ready for your use in the classroom!
  • Scholastic Network--This site offers many resources. The company has matched their Internet resources to states' standards, allowing teachers to easily find Internet projects which match state standards.
  • TrackStar--this site has now adding a feature for matching their tracks to standards. Click on "themes and standards."
    Example Track on Classroom Management: Go to TrackStar (above link) and then enter track ID 7853, then press [Enter/Return]. At next screen, click on "View in Frames"
  • Cyberguides--CyberGuides are supplementary, standards-based, web-delivered units of instruction centered on core works of literature. These are based on California's standards, but will assist teachers from other states as well.
  • Blue Web'n--Blue Web'n is a searchable database of Internet learning sites categorized by subject area, audience, and type (lessons, activities, projects, resources, references, & tools).
  • Tammy's Technology Tips: Integrated Technology Projects--Use the building block model to design an integrated technology project, complete with hyperlinks. Or search for a project by subject or grade level.
  • Marco Polo--this site has wonderful resources for classroom teachers. Check out the "illuminations" for math sites correlated to standards. There are some very impressive resources available through this site.
  • Web Quest Page--A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web.
  • PBS TeacherSource--Many good resources on this site, including 1300 lesson plans and activities, matched to standards.
  • Apple Learning Interchange--Apple has developed an online educational environment to facilitate the interchange of ideas among teachers, education leaders, visionaries, and innovators.
  • Gateway to Educational Materials--this site provides access to lesson plans, curriculum units and other education resources on the Internet!
  • www.4kids.org--This page has well defined projects for students.
  • TeachersFirst--collection of Internet resources and lesson plans drawn from around the world. Each resource is selected and reviewed by one of TeachersFirst's reviewers, all of whom have classroom teaching experience. Reviewed resources are grouped by subject and grade level.
  • Classroom Connect--view various resources available through Classroom Connect. One very popular item is the Classroom Connect Newsletter.
  • Journey North--Engaging Students in a Global Study of Wildlife Migration and Seasonal Change
  • Pathfinder Science--"Creating student scientists, not just science students!"
  • The RAC Model (Research, Analysis, Communication)--provides a model of instruction that integrates technology with higher order thinking to teach curricular standards. This is provided by a rural K-12 Maryland school, Caroline County Public School.
  • ExploraSource--This is a free online service that finds resources to address curriculum topics and national, state, and local standards (click on "Standards Viewer)
  • Chuck Friesen's Math Home Page--Dr. Friesen is the Directory of Technology for Lincoln Public Schools. His background is in math, so he has assembled a site with very useful links to math resources.

Search Engines, Directories and Tips

Searching Resources

Internet Search Tools: Click on "Internet Search Tools-Quick Reference Guide." This resource helps you determine which search engine to use and how to use it. This bookmark is also available in PDF format. To help retain clarity when copying, a black and white version is also available.

The Four NETS for Better Searching: The most comprehensive engine out there at the moment seems to be Google, and that's what we'll focus on here.

Nueva--This is a fantastic site! There are pages of questions (how do I find quotations, quality sites that have been evaluated, company sites, etc.) Check this one out!

Librarians' Index to the Internet

What is Information Literacy?--This is a web page designed by Joyce Valenza.

Search Engines allow the user to search a database that is compiled by a computer program that collects information from web servers, indexes it, and creates a keyword-searchable database

Directories are general or subject-specific lists compiled by a human being.

Meta search engines search a group of search sites.

  • Metacrawler--this metasearch engine indicates on which search engine(s) matches were made.
  • Inference Find--this metasearch engine categories your matches as to where the site was located (whether educational site, government site, commercial site, etc.)
  • List of Other Meta search sites

Portals are special web sites that offer a collection of services, resources that could include search engines, news email, etc.

  • Discoveryschool.com clip art site--Educators can use up to 10 clips free of charge. Be sure to see the copyright page at this site as you need to credit Discoveryschoolcom when using their clipart.
  • Country Clip Art (free ones) by Lisa--This site includes a variety of country-style graphics. If you use these graphics on a web page, you need to give credit to Lisa. Be sure to read the instructions on her site.
  • Clip Art--Free clip art for a variety of topics
  • Cherished Teddies clip art site. These are provided free of charge
  • Backgrounds Etc. clip art site: scroll down toward the bottom of the page to find all types of clip art (cherished teddies from above is on this site also)

On-Line Resources

  • QuizStar from SCR*TEC--create a custom quiz that students can take on-line
    Example: Click on this link to see a quiz over the Nebraska Driver's Manual. You will need to enter your name, on the next screen choose "add me to this class."

  • SCR*TEC's Web Worksheet Wizard--This web-based utility will allow you to create a lesson, worksheet or class page on the world-wide-web. All you need to use this utility is your browser and some time.
    Example Worksheet: Enter #5939 to see a sample one done on Cooperative Learning.
  • TeacherWeb--free personal website that's as easy to use as the bulletin board in your classroom. Post assignments, announcements, and other educational material on your own classroom's web page. With TeacherWeb, you simply type in new homework assignments & special announcements while viewing your website.
  • eBoard--the easiest way to post messages, photos and files online. You can use it for group communication or as a homepage. Using the familiar image of notes on a corkboard, it enables you to post pictures, announcements, files, messages, links and interactive discussions online in seconds. To get to my eboard, type "sblankenship" and use the password "esu6" to see the most recent emessage(s) I have posted.
  • Quia--Create your own games, quizzes, and home pages. This site also contains thousands of activities in over 40 subject areas (created by other educators).
  • Zoomerang--this site allows you to survey groups. This can be used for collecting data for grants, for surveying teachers after staff development activities, or collecting data regarding school issues. The free surveys will allow up to 50 responses and the site will provide the survey on-line for 10 days.
  • Blink--allows you a place to deposit your bookmarks so you'll have them wherever you go!
  • School Notes--this site allows you to post class notes, assignments, announcements. Students and parents find the notes by going to this site and entering the zip code for the school.
  • Homestead--here you can create your own personal web page: students can put up pages, school organizations, teachers, small businesses, etc.
  • Calendars Net--free on-line calendar hosting! Put your calendars for activities, lunches, meetings for organizations, etc. on the web where parents, teachers, and students can easily find them!
  • Fun Brain--K-8 site which allows teachers to create quizzes or utilize others' on-line assessments
  • Lightspan: Your Class On-line--a free classroom Web site! Your Class Online combines valuable educational resources from Lightspan.com with your own content and information to create a site that's unique to your classroom community.
  • eHomeRoom--Track all school and non-school activities in one integrated and customizable calendar reachable by students, parents and teachers.
  • Project Based Learning Checklists--This site contains age-appropriate, customizable project checklists for written reports, multimedia projects, oral presentations, and science projects. The use of these checklists keeps students on track and allows them to take responsibility for their own learning through peer- and self-evaluation.
  • Profiler--Profiler inspires cooperation and collaboration among teachers and students to help them improve their skills around a general topic. Use Profiler to strengthen your school district's ability to share expertise. You can take a survey to assess your technology abilities and find someone who can help you strengthen these skills within your school.

Events & Grant Information

  • Midwest Internet Institute--scheduled for July 28-29, 2003 at Lux Middle School in Lincoln, NE. The focus for this conference is on Internet and how it can be integrated into the curriculum.
  • NETA Spring Conference--scheduled each spring at Holiday Inn Central in Omaha.
  • Excellence in Education grants--There will be no Tier I and Tier II grants for 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
  • Community Technology Fund--The Community Technology Fund was created by statute (86-1512) "to provide incentives for collaborative community and regional approaches toward more effective and efficient use of technology to meet the needs of citizens, political subdivisions, and other entities as determined by the commission." It is estimated that 2002 fund information will be released November 2001, with applications for 2002 funds due in February 2002.
  • Nebraska Technology Training Grants (formerly NEBSAT)--This link to the NITC site provides not only the Tech Training grant information, but also other applicable grants. Grants are due April 2, 2002, with announcements of recipients in May or June 2002.
